Plastic Pipe and Hose Strapping

Plastic pipe strapping holds bundles of PVC, PE and PP pipe and coils of hose together through stacking, loading and transport. Start with PP strap in about 3/8 in (10 mm) or 1/2 in (12 mm) width for bundles and coils.

Long bundles, flexible loads

A pipe bundle flexes in transit, and the pipes slide against each other. Bands spaced evenly along the bundle limit that movement. On hose and small-diameter coils, the strap stops the wraps from springing open.

Size and machines

Start with virgin PP at about 3/8 in × 0.024 in (10 × 0.60 mm, 309 lbf / 140 kg) for light bundles and 1/2 in × 0.024 in (12 × 0.60 mm, 441 lbf / 200 kg) for heavier ones. Large-diameter PE coils spring open with high force; look at embossed PET for those loads. At the end of the extrusion line, bundles can be banded automatically; in the warehouse, semi-automatic or manual banding works. If a pipe buyer's specification cites ASTM D3950 or EN 13394, add the requirement to your inquiry.

Frequently asked questions

How much tension can thin-wall pipe take?

Too much tension can crush or ovalize it. Keep tension at the level that holds the bundle and spread the bands evenly along its length.

Do dunnage and strap go on together?

Yes. Dunnage or cradles keep the pipes in rows, and the strap turns dunnage and pipes into one pack. Run the strap over the dunnage so the force goes into the blocks, not the pipes.
