Marble and granite slabs secured to steel A-frames with green polyester straps in a stone yard (illustrative image)

Marble and Natural Stone Strapping

Marble strapping is the high-strength band that secures marble, granite and travertine slabs to A-frames or bundles and cut-to-size tile to wooden crates. The weight and sharp edges of stone call for the thicker sizes of embossed PET strap.

Why plastic strap?

Steel banding touching stone that comes off the wet saw or waits in an open yard will rust and can stain light-colored marble. PET does not rust. Slab edges are sharp and will cut a tight strap, so do not skip edge and corner protection.

The container trip

Slab bundles and crates go through long periods of vibration in a container. Embossed PET stretches and recovers, so it holds its tension through that movement. Battery or pneumatic tools suit crate banding; manual banding with buckles works in the stock yard. For stone shipped to the United States, a buyer's specification may rely on ASTM D3950 for nonmetallic strap; raise any such requirement when you ask for a quote.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use wire or steel banding on marble slabs?

You can, but they risk rust in wet conditions. If light-colored stone could stain, choose PET and apply it with edge protectors.

Which size for crated tile shipments?

Increase thickness as crate weight rises: embossed PET at 5/8 in × 0.039 in is 1,290 lbf (585 kg) and at 3/4 in × 0.039 in 1,543 lbf (700 kg) in our catalog. The crate's own fasteners carry the load; the strap keeps the crate closed against outside forces.
