Wooden cable drums secured to pallets with white polypropylene straps in a cable depot (illustrative image)

Cable and Electronics Strapping

Cable strapping keeps coils of cable and wire from unwinding, holds reel lagging in place and secures electronics cartons to the pallet. PP strap is enough for light coils and cartons; move to embossed PET on heavy reels.

Coils, reels and cartons

Wound cable tends to loosen; bands spaced evenly around the coil hold the wraps in place. On wooden reels, secure the lagging boards with strap; the lagging protects the cable from impacts. On electronics cartons, the strap should hold the pallet together without crushing the carton edge.

As weight goes up

Virgin PP at about 3/8 in × 0.024 in (10 × 0.60 mm, 309 lbf / 140 kg) is the starting size for light coils and cartons. On full, heavy reels, band the lagging with embossed PET; 5/8 in embossed PET runs from 772 to 1,290 lbf (350 to 585 kg) in our catalog. A semi-automatic table machine is practical for electronics cartons. If a cable export specification asks for ASTM D3950 or EN 13394, we will settle the measuring method in the quote.

Frequently asked questions

Can the strap damage the cable jacket?

If tension is high and the contact area narrow, it can leave a mark on the jacket. Keep tension at the level that gathers the coil, and put a thin protector under the strap on sensitive jackets.

How many points should I band a coil at?

Add bands as coil diameter grows, and place them at equal intervals around the circumference so the wraps are held with the same force all around.
