Agricultural Product Strapping

Agricultural strapping secures produce crates and bags of fertilizer, seed and feed to the pallet. It keeps the pallet together from cold storage to the export truck.

What crate and bag pallets need

Produce crates are strapped together with corner posts; the frame stops the crates from sliding sideways in storage and on the road. On bag pallets, strap limits slippage of the top layers and works well together with stretch film. In a humid store, plastic strap will not rust.

Choosing strap for the cold chain

1/2 in × 0.024 in (12 × 0.60 mm) virgin PP, 441 lbf (200 kg), is a good starting point for crate pallets; white is standard, and yellow, green, blue and black are also made. PP loses impact strength below freezing, so for frozen product choose 1/2 in × 0.028 in embossed PET, 661 lbf (300 kg). If an export buyer's packaging specification calls for a strap standard, add the ASTM D3950 or EN 13394 reference to your inquiry.

Frequently asked questions

Which strap works in cold storage?

In chilled storage above freezing, PP is enough for crate pallets. In frozen storage PP can stiffen and turn brittle; choose embossed PET there.

How can I strap pallets on the farm?

For a few pallets, manual banding with buckles is enough. In a packhouse, a semi-automatic table machine speeds things up, and at high volume an automatic pallet strapper does; the automatic machine runs virgin PP.
